If there is living space above or beside your garage, yes — and the reason is more concrete than general energy-efficiency talk. In most homes around here, the garage door is the single largest uninsulated surface on that side of the house. It is bigger than any window and often bigger than the wall area around it.
If the garage is detached and nothing above it is heated, the calculation is different and mostly about noise and durability.
What R-value means here
R-value measures resistance to heat flow. Higher is better. On garage doors it maps directly onto how the panel is built:
- Single-layer steel, no insulation — roughly R-0 to R-2. A sheet of steel with a frame. Loud, flexible, dents easily.
- Two-layer with polystyrene — roughly R-6 to R-9. Rigid foam board fitted into the steel pan. A real improvement, moderate cost.
- Three-layer steel–polyurethane–steel — roughly R-12 to R-18 and up. Foam injected between two steel skins, bonding to both.
Manufacturer numbers are not perfectly comparable across brands, and some quote the panel rather than the whole assembled door. Use them to compare construction types, not to make fine distinctions between two similar products.
Polyurethane is structurally better, not just warmer
This is the part that gets underplayed. Because polyurethane is injected as a liquid and expands to bond to both steel skins, it makes the panel act as a single rigid unit rather than a sheet of steel with a board rattling behind it.
The practical consequences: the door is stiffer and resists denting far better, it is noticeably quieter in operation because the panel does not drum, and the insulation cannot settle or fall out of the pan over time the way loose polystyrene board sometimes does.
For a garage that faces a basketball hoop or a driveway where things get thrown around, this matters as much as the thermal number.
The room over the garage
This is the case where insulation stops being a nice-to-have. The bedroom-over-garage layout is standard across the 1970s and 1980s subdivisions in this area, and it is the room that is always cold in January in an otherwise comfortable house.
The floor of that room sits over an unconditioned space whose largest exterior surface is a thin steel door. Insulating the door does not solve the whole problem — the floor cavity and the wall between garage and house matter too — but it addresses the biggest single leak, and it is the least invasive of the three.
Attached garages, generally
Even without a room above, an attached garage shares a wall with conditioned space. Every degree the garage drops pulls heat through that shared wall. An insulated door raises the garage's baseline temperature meaningfully, which reduces that loss and has some pleasant side effects: the car is not starting at ambient outdoor temperature, stored liquids do not freeze, and the space is usable in February rather than being a cold store.
Detached garages
Here the argument is different and honestly weaker on the thermal side. If nothing above is heated and the garage itself is unheated, insulation is mostly about noise, rigidity and dent resistance. A mid-range two-layer door is usually the sensible choice.
The exception is a detached garage used as a workshop, in which case you are heating the space and the door matters again.
What insulation does not fix
Weather seal. An expensively insulated door with a cracked bottom seal, gaps at the jambs and no top seal will still be draughty, and the cold air coming through a quarter-inch gap along the bottom will undo a good part of the panel's benefit.
Seal is cheap relative to the door. It should be replaced with the door, and checked every autumn afterwards — rubber hardens and cracks in this climate.
The weight consequence
An insulated door is heavier than the uninsulated one it replaces, sometimes substantially. That has two knock-on effects that get missed:
The springs must be sized to the new weight. Reusing the old spring on a heavier door leaves it unbalanced from day one, and an unbalanced door destroys openers. Any competent installation includes new springs specified for the new door.
The opener may not be up to it. If your opener is already near its limit or over fifteen years old, the extra weight will finish it. Worth weighing the new door and having that conversation before installation day rather than after.
What we would suggest
Attached garage with living space above — three-layer polyurethane, R-12 or better. This is the one where the money is clearly well spent, and the one you will notice.
Attached garage, nothing above — two-layer polystyrene at minimum; three-layer if the garage is used for anything beyond parking.
Detached, unheated — a mid-range two-layer door is fine. Spend the difference on better rollers and a quieter opener instead.
Detached workshop — treat it as an attached garage and insulate properly.
