La Grange is the one town on our list that is in Cook County rather than DuPage, and it is also the oldest. The Village Historic District covers 215 acres and over a thousand buildings, nearly all built between the 1870s and 1930, including Prairie School, Queen Anne and Victorian houses and three by Frank Lloyd Wright. Founder Franklin Cossitt laid the village out from 1870, and the town has been essentially fully built out since its population peaked in 1970.
That history produces the most demanding garage door work we do. Homes from the 1870s to the 1920s were not designed around cars at all, so garages were added later, set at the back of narrow lots, and sized for vehicles considerably smaller than today's. Original openings are often undersized, wood doors are common, and the structure around the opening is frequently the limiting factor rather than the door itself. It is also a town where a modern raised-panel steel door on a Queen Anne looks exactly as wrong as it sounds — carriage-house styling and appropriate hardware matter here more than anywhere else we work.
